Quick Clemens Update

posted in General Sports |

I have been unable to find a complete video of Roger Clemens’ press conference today, in which he played an excerpt of a taped conversation with McNamee, but here is a portion of it. As has been the case with every development so far, this conversation sheds little light on who is telling the truth. McNamee acts as one would expect a man who told the truth and feels bad about it would, but at the same time does not refute Clemens when he says “I’m telling the truth”. Regardless of the content, it is pretty low of Clemens to secretly record and release a conversation, especially one involving McNamee’s sick child.

Update: Here, from ESPN.com, is the full portion of the call played at the press conference.

Lets face it, if McNamee had said anything even resembling “Roger Clemens didn’t take steroids” then that portion of the phone call would have been released or not bleeped/cut out. Clemens says “For the life of me I’m trying to find out why you would tell guys that I used steroids.” It doesn’t sound like he’s refuting it, it sounds like he’s pissed off that someone tattled on him.

Clemens needs to hire a new legal team. Everything he has done so far has not come close to clearing his name. Why would anyone hear this tape and say “this can help your case lets release it”. They should have either burned that tape and not bring it up or during the conversation (assuming Clemens is guilty, which sorry I do) Clemens should have taken a chance and said something along the lines of “Why did you lie?” or “You know I never took steriods or HGH!” and hope that McNamee gave a response that would help clear his name, and if he did not and said something like “Roger you know you took steriods” they could have just burned the tape. Instead he came off as scolding McNamee for ratting on him. If Clemens is that worried about his reputation he needs to hire another legal team or throw himself to the public court and admitted that he did take these substances and apologize for it. Otherwise he should just lock him self in his house or move to another country and never bring it up again.

Agreed, he didn’t help himself at all and came off looking like a jerk. His declarations that he’s telling the truth might mean something if he was just talking to McNamee, but he knew the conversation was being recorded, so they’re meaningless.

I also want to add that the more I think about it, the more despicable it is that Clemens would play this tape and then sue McNamee, when the man is clearly hurting and in a horrible position. If it turns out that Clemens is guilty, it makes his current actions completely unforgivable; how selfish is it that he would rather McNamee go to jail and leave his dying kid without a father, than man up and admit he took steroids?

Is this the suit where he isn’t asking for any damages? I heard he filed a preemptive law suit before the the 60 Minutes interview which would in effect make it so McNamee could not sue Clemens for defamation.

Clemens needs to take some tips from Randy Moss on how to successfully do a press conference.
